Implantation immunology

In recent years, the role and importance of the immune system for both successful implantation and safe progress and development of the fetus during pregnancy, have been increasingly recognised. What seems to be the problem is one thing: inflammation. Let us explain what this means:

Implantation is a complex process that involves interaction between the embryo (trophectoderm) and the uterine lining (endometrium). During this process there is mutual exchange of substances and chemicals. This is sometimes referred to as ‘embryo-maternal cross talking’. 

In any pregnancy, the embryo and mainly the placental site (trophectoderm), is regarded by the woman’s body as a foreign body, for obvious reasons, and it is expected from the immune system to react against the embryo, especially in the early stages of pregnancy.

This reaction probably assists the initial embryo implantation by creating a local inflammation area at the implantation site (were the embryo touches the lining and starts developing blood circulation).
This instant inflammation helps the embryo to stick and is a part of a normal procedure, but with a start and an end. After few hours this irritation must stop in order for the pregnancy to continue developing successfully.
This reaction occurs in all pregnancies and normally does not last more than 24-48 hours. For the above reason it is concluded that it is a perfectly normal and necessary procedure for every successful pregnancy.

However, in some cases, the body does not accept the pregnancy as it should and continues the initial reaction for longer and with greater intensity. This finally results in greater local inflammation and the small placental vessels, important for the initial feeding of the fetus, are often obstructed from small blood clots, and as final result we can observe a growth retardation and in most cases the final death of the fetus at very early stages.

In most cases of unexplained infertility and repeated miscarriages, this is the key to the problem.
Very often these women believe that the problem lies in the quality of their eggs, but even changing the egg as a last resort, the miscarriage is inevitable, while other women are able to become pregnant in a normal way, but in most of the cases the pregnancy ends up in a miscarriage.

With over 15 years of research and treatment of this problem, our clinic is one of the world’s leading clinics in immune research and treatment, having developed our own treatment protocols and a very simple way to investigate and monitor the immune system before and during pregnancy. The now days, these protocols are widely accepted by many doctors and clinics around the world, and are used to treat difficult cases with unexplained infertility and recurrent miscarriages with high success rates!

Cost and safety
Until now, the immunological therapies were much more expensive than the IVF treatment itself and more likely to present complications, because of the medications often used (IVIG).
The introduction of INTRALIPID infusions into reproductive immunology arsenal, and the follow-up of treatment with very simple blood tests, have greatly reduced costs and dramatically increased treatment safety.
